I have been fishing the majority of my life and there are a few baits I have found that consistently catch bass no matter where you fish. Three baits always seems to work:

Spinner Bait

A spinner bait can be fished in many ways and it all types of situations and is just a solid bait to have in your tackle box. It is versatile in the fact that it can be fished at varying depths simply by slowing the retrieve. It also creates a lot of vibration in the water which can draw a reaction bite. It handles multiple types of cover and structure well also. My spinner bait of choice is the War Eagle spinner bait in white and chartruese with a gold and silver blade.

Crankbait

A crankbait is another very versatile bait that just flat catches fish. It can be fished at different depts in varying types of cover and requires little to no experience by the user to fish it. Doesn’t matter if it’s a squarebill or a lipless crankbait, cast it out and reel it in at just about any speed and it will catch fish. Some of our favorites are a Strike King Red Eye Shad in Red Craw during the spring and any shad colored crankbait other times of the year.

Plastic Worm

Lastly, the Texas Rigged plastic worm always seems to catch bass wherever you go. It takes a little more finesse and a little more patience to fish a worm but it is not a steep learning curve by any means. It can be pitched into any type cover and around any type structure. We have found a ribbon worm in red shad works well in North Carolina during the summer months when the fish are a little deeper.

If you don’t want to take our word for it, Shaye Baker from Wired2Fish wrote a much more detailed article about these three baits and their effectiveness in the article below. Check it out!

If you’re new to bass fishing or perhaps you’ve been at it a while and you’re just looking to take someone else fishing for the first time, there are a handful of baits that are almost guaranteed to get bit. But getting bit isn’t the only issue for someone with limited fishing experience; you’ll also want a bait that can be cast and fished easily.
