GoPro is arguably the most well known action camera in the world, but they come with a price. It is a price that a lot of struggling YouTubers, adventure seekers, and hobbiests sometimes can’t afford. However, you don’t always have to spend hundreds of dollars to get started filming fishing trips and other outdoor adventures. There are other options to choose from other than GoPro when it comes to action cameras that are much more affordable. They have great video quality and are durable enough to hold up during your outdoor activities. In fact, you can get started filming your fishing trips and other outdoor adventures for less than $100. We started our YouTube channel using value priced action cameras and our cell phones and now have over 50 videos on our channel and just over 400 subs. Here is the gear we use:
Action Camera ($63): For over a year now, we have used the AKASO EK7000 Action Camera at the time of this post, the camera is one of the best sellers on Amazon with over 27k reviews and a 4.5 star rating. We would rate this camera at least 4.5 stars. The camera kit cost $63 dollars for Amazon Prime Members at the time of this post. It includes multiple adapters, a case, batteries, charger, and a remote switch. It boasts 4k footage and the color on the camera is very good. We run our cameras on 1080P to save space on the cards. Running at 1080P very little color grading is needed in post. The battery life is right at 1.5 hours. We run 32GB micro SD cards in our cameras and they usually will film for a whole eight hour day before needing to be dumped or downloaded to a PC. I would recommend buying some extra batteries if you plan on fishing and filming for extended periods of time. Either that or you can buy a good mobile charger that will get your batteries nearly back to full charge between battery changes.
Chest Harness ($12): We attach our action cameras to the TEKCAM Action Camera Check Harness. This is another Amazon best seller and we wear them for hours at a time when on a fishing trip. This is another product we have had for well over a year now and the harness is showing little signs of wear. It is durable, comfortable, and easy to adjust. It is a must have if you want to film first person point of view while fishing.
Lavalier Mic ($14): The down side of any action camera is the audio quality. The audo is always going to be best when paired with a lavalier microphone like the PoP voice Professional Lavalier Lapel Microphone. Another quality product at a great price point. We are two years into our video making on YouTube and both have the very first mic we purchased. They work great. You will need a Micro USB Jack Male to 3.5mm Female adapter ($8) to pair your Lavalier Mic with your AKASO action camera.
This is the setup we have used for almost two years now and it has worked flawlessly. We hope this information will help you save some money and get started filming your outdoor adventures sooner rather than later!
